Appreciation of quality can stray into pretension real easily if you’re not careful, it's the line between 'good hipster' and 'bad hipster', or 'film buff' and 'douchey guy you never want to watch a movie with'. Fortunately, Koelschip Yard on Pollokshaws Road knows just how to stay on the right side of the line.

With 14 keg lines and three cask ones, it offers one of the widest beer selections you’ll find on Glasgow’s Southside. With each beer carefully chosen, stored and poured by a team of knowledgeable staff, it’s also one of the best.

The beers come from all across the world but only from small and independent breweries, because you can get big brewers’ stuff a hundred other places if that’s what you’re after. They only serve 1/3 and 2/3s because the focus here is on trying and tasting, and you can get a pint a hundred other places if that’s what you’re after. There’s no kitchen but a fine selection of salamis, scotch eggs and nuts, because you can get proper bar grub a hundred other places if that’s what you’re after.

The Koelschip knows what it wants to do and does every bit of it really, really well. It won’t be for everybody and that’s okay – not everyone looks for the same thing in a bar and those that try and be all things to all people end up being nothing much to anybody. They end up being Wetherspoons.
