Considering the Strathbungo area essentially consists of just a few streets and intersecting lanes, it hosts an unlikely number of upscale eateries, and The Bungo is no exception.
Opened by the duo behind Gibson Street’s Left Bank Bar and The Two Figs on Byres Road, The Bungo offers up a more varied menu than that of its haughty West-end sisters at noticeably more reasonable prices. An average three course meal will set you back about £14, with particular winners including the sticky pork ribs starter, the West Coast mussels, and lamb badami curry with coconut rice, made with slow cooked lamb shoulder so succulent it will quite literally melt apart in your mouth.
The Bungo also has an impressive breakfast menu, featuring a staggeringly exciting veggie breakfast, along with a Lebanese breakfast, Spanish style scrambled eggs and the 100% necessary inclusion of the Bloody Mary. If you’re in the mood for spoiling yourself, try the grilled banana and chocolate bread which, on first bite, proves that heaven is a place in Strathbungo.
The Bungo’s warm, spacious environs also host events including stand up comedy, with regulars including the Greater Shawlands Republic Party, a movement intent on having the Southside withdraw from under the tyrannical thumb of Glasgow City Council and establish an autonomous Southside Republic. Ambitious stuff, well worth a look.
According to your esteemed tastebuds, they also offer one of the very Best Bloody Marys in town, as voted in our 2018 Food and Drink Survey.
