Dundee punches above its weight in terms of students, with two full-fledged universities – the University of Dundee and Abertay University – as well as Duncan of Jordanstone art school and the city’s college. And where there are students, there are, inevitably, plenty of pubs to go around. There’s a vast selection of bars and pubs in Dundee, with student-friendly spots rubbing shoulders with craft bars and charming old-school pubs.
In the city centre, Trades House retains many of its original features such as its mosaic floor and stained-glass windows and is an atmospheric pub in which to spend an evening. Meanwhile, around the corner, craft beer titans Brewdog have breathed some new life into the former City Chambers with their Dundee outpost.
The ever-popular Perth Road features a range of pubs and bars aimed at Dundee students and locals alike. The venerable old Speedwell Bar (also known as Mennies after its former landlady) is one Dundee pub where the two groups meet; it’s a great Edwardian bar with original fixtures and a great range of beers on tap. Elsewhere on the Perth Road you’ll find student haunt Art Bar within touching distance of the Duncan of Jordanstone art college, laid-back beer bar Braes just a few minutes up the road, while sandwiched in between is the tree-lined beer garden of Laing’s for the several sunny days of Scottish weather a year.
