Dundee is home to one of Scotland's finest art schools, with Duncan of Jordanstone attracting art students from across the country. But, we hear you ask, where do the city's emerging artists and art students head when they need inspiration? Well, they head to the city's collection of art galleries and exhibition spaces, that's where.
The primary space for contemporary art in the city is Dundee Contemporary Arts, or DCA for short. It's a vast multi-room space that displays everything from cutting-edge digital art to sculpture and painting. The two gallery spaces are complemented by a two-screen cinema, art shop, a research centre developed in conjunction with Dundee University, a host of resources for artists, and the rather nice Jute Cafe Bar as well.
Work from cutting-edge and emerging artists can be found at Generator Projects, a grassroots project space that enables early career artists to develop their work, and the two Dundee universities play a key role in the art ecosystem, with regular exhibitions at Dundee University’s Cooper Gallery and Abertay’s Hannah Maclure Centre. Elsewhere, fine art fans are catered for by Dundee’s McManus Gallerieshouse the city’s impressive collection, with a regular programme of exhibitions drawn from the in-house collection and elsewhere, and work is well underway on the city's outpost of the V&A Museum which is set to open in 2018.
