Phillies of Shawlands

Phillies of Shawlands is the second venture from the guys that brought Redmond’s to Dennistoun a few years ago. At the time, Redmond’s was the UK’s first bar to pay all staff the living wage, an ethos they have extended south of the river and continued in Phillies. This attitude contributes to the community feel that Phillies has really tapped into in Shawlands.

A warehouse-style interior of mostly metal stools and distressed wood tables gives the place an understated cool vibe. Playing exclusively vinyl, locals can bring their records along to listen to while they sip on the terrific collection of beers. Smaller breweries like Magic Rock and Fallen Brewery have been given residency on dedicated taps which rotate through their range of beers, while a separate tap exists for guest ales from little-known Glasgow beer makers.

The food is fancier than you would expect from a pub, with a mix of sourdough pizzas, salads and more out-there options (braised octopus, anyone?) all well cooked by their accomplished chefs and their one-page cocktail menu is well-devised. The rhubarb martini is particularly good, but staff are happy to go off-piste if you want something that’s not there. All in all, a great place to spend a few hours. Oh, and dogs are allowed too.
