Julie’s Kopitiam (Cope-pit-tea-yam, maybe?) is the work of former Masterchef contestant, TV chef and pop-up food god Julie Lin MacLeod.
In years gone by, pop-up food was all the rage as stalls set up shop in one corner of the country, enchanting the locals with their authentic street food, only to pack it all up and hit the road come nightfall. But that’s a young eatery's game, and many of the most revered players in the pop-up world have recently chosen to settle down somewhere, get some stability in their life and stop hopping from place to place with no idea where their next meal is going. If you’re a Southsider, Julie’s decision to take roost there is a pretty big win.
Sat on Shawlands’ gastronomically-charged Pollokshaws Road, the Malaysian joint follows the trend of Southside bars and cafes that know how to do a lot by doing a little. While the bustling bars of the City Centre and the chic hangouts of the West End often feel the need to line the walls with eye-catching decoration and pack the menu with an endless catalogue of choices, those down South have a tendency to keep things simple.
Julie’s Kopitiam is a cosy café with a few green flourishes to make it feel homely and inviting, the menu offers a nice array of plant and animal options and nothing about the place feels like its bending over backwards to get your attention.
The food is packed with flavour, with dishes of differing sizes ideally suited either to sharing around or picking a favourite and driving a fork into the greedy hands of whoever tries to get near it. It's well-priced, no-fuss great food in a comfortable cafe – ideal.
Every year, The Skinny holds a Food & Drink Survey, where we give you the opportunity to vote for the best restaurants, pubs and cafes in town. Julie's earned a spot in our 2019 Food & Drink Survey in the Best Lunch and Dinner category.
