Curious Liquids is a dreamy wine shop attached to Phillies of Shawlands in the Southside of Glasgow. Opening out on to Kilmarnock Road, this small off licence has an almost bohemian feel with an intoxicating selection of wines and beers reaching right up to the ceiling to choose from.

The store is carefully stocked by people who really know their stuff and are more than happy to help you out in finding exactly the wine or beer bottle for your taste and budget. You could spend lots of time – and even more money – here. Their resident wine merchant Dayton Joline hosts regular Introduction to Wine Tasting classes, where, for £15, each guest samples three white and three red wines. The wines are served blind, forcing people to look past their own preconceptions about particular wines – Chardonnay, for example – and really taste the stuff. The wine varieties and price points are not revealed until the whole thing is over.

Joline is a generous host, dispelling common myths and pretentions along the way, and encouraging wine novices to trust their instincts and discover details in the wines that suit their palette. A flat corkage fee applies to anything purchased from their store, which can be popped opened and enjoyed in Phillies straight away. If you’ve got cash to throw around, there’s even a £60 bottle you could buy which would cost you £200 to drink at another Glasgow establishment.
