Leiper Fine Art is named after William Leiper, the Glasgow architect who designed the building in which it sits – the former home of Sun Life Insurance. A category A-listed building, it was constructed in 1894, with this purpose-built gallery space run by Alexander Reid, art dealer extraordinaire and friend to Van Gough. An apt location for the Leiper gallery, then, which aims to show “contemporary art in a historic setting.” The gallery has none of the grand features of the building’s exterior, alas. It’s a very minimalist space, with clean white walls and polished wood floor – although there are a couple of ornate chandeliers lighting up the room.
