If you listened to the cynics, 2018 wouldn’t have seemed like the optimum time to open a record store. If the physical is dead and gone, then nobody told these guys on Victoria Road who recently created a haven for vinyl fans in the Southside of Glasgow.
The small shop has an enjoyable and judicious selection of records, with a good mix of new releases and classics; clearly the brainchild of some serious music fans. Prices are reasonable, at around £20 for a new record, and they also serve coffee and cake, as well as running occasional live music events, with the likes of Beerjacket performing in-store in early December.
The shop's weekly Babes in Toyland event is a popular morning meet-up group for parents in the area to bring along their records, share music with each other and forget that they have kids for a while. Staff are always helpful and not snobbishly puritanical about vinyl. They’ve even got a Spotify playlist to prove it.
A high stakes loyalty card is also on the go to entice music fans back time and time again: buy 10 records and get the next one free. Now that really is Some Great Reward.
