Hippo Beers

Hippo Beers is just a short stroll past the Botanic Gardens along Queen Margaret Drive – when you spot the cute little hippo sign peeping out, you know you’re in the right place. Named for the patron saint of brewers, Saint Augustine of Hippo, the shop takes things back to basics with walls kept to a plain white minimum (apart from the odd hippo decal, obvs), and wall-to-wall beer takes over.

Check the blackboard for new arrivals and the Hippo 'beer of the week' – or dive right in to the shelves of bottles, organised by country. The shop carries a wide range of brews from Scotland and the rest of the UK, but also looks further afield to the likes of the USA, Scandinavia and Germany. They sell their own Hippo-themed drinks paraphernalia, and staff are more than happy to talk through all the choices on offer to find something you’re into.
