Tucked away on the second floor of Princes Square just off Buchanan Street, Sugar Dumplin is a blast of fresh tropical air. With beach huts, fairy lights, rustically peeling paintwork and a charmingly eclectic mix of furniture, it’s more West Indies than West of Scotland, a change in pace from the ever-mobbed style mile just outside.
The Caribbean BBQ-inspired menu has four house sauces to choose from, ranging from fruity to fiery. Starters, mains, burgers, wraps and desserts boast adventurous flavour fusions, from jerk-seasoned calamari to creole-style roasted butternut squash with chickpea, spinach and coconut. There’s something for everyone, with vegetarian and kids options available, too.
With an endearingly sun-weathered rum shack style bar made from tin, naturally the alcohol list is extensive, particularly popular with cocktail aficionados. The infamous ‘Zombified’, a tall cocktail, contains light, dark and ‘Tiki Fire’ rum, a combination so heady it’s limited to two per person and comes with a warning label to ‘enjoy with care’.
