Nestled between Strathbungo, Shawlands, Battlefield and Govanhill in the south side, Queen's Park is a deceptively large green haven. Named for Mary, Queen of Scots (not Queen Victoria, as is commonly thought), the park is built on the site of the Battle of Langside, and rumour has it there are still remnants of the 16th century battle to be found today. Head up the hill to the flagpole for glorious views across the city – you can see over to Ben Lomond on a good day. The park is also home to glasshouses, filled with exotic creepy crawlies, the Scottish Poet's Rose Garden, dedicated to poets from Burns to MacDiarmind, and a duck pond. On sunny days, the hills fill up with sun worshippers, but it's never as rowdy as Kelvingrove in the west end. It's open from dusk until dawn throughout the year.
