So we’re well into the 21^st century, and it’s fair to say that French Cuisine is not the byword for culinary excellence it once was. Our tastes have diversified, and Gallic dishes no longer yield the allure of an exotic world beyond our own – certainly not in the West End anyhow, with its Indian tapas, or its Thai street food, or its Teppanyaki restaurants where the chefs will literally hurl the food into your mouth.

Flying the Tricolour high and proud however is La Vallee Blanche on Byres Road, a mainstay of the Hillhead dining scene since 2008. The cosy, alpine lodge feel pays homage to the off-piste ski slope it takes its name from, and whilst far from the cheapest option, the offerings are certainly fresh. The seasonal menu gets changed up semi-regularly so check the website for details. Of course, it almost goes without saying that La Valle Blanche’s wine list is excellent, with varieties chosen from France’s many grape producing regions. Staff have been known to go to extreme lengths to satisfy patrons here, making La Valle Blanche a great shout for anyone looking to spoil somebody special in their life.
