The Newlands Road café has a stylish black exterior and an airy white interior, a cue to the balance and simplicity of style you’ll find on the menu. Boasting a range of traditional Nordic dishes to sit-in or takeaway, the main event here is the “Smørrebrød” – a trio of open sandwiches topped with salmon, avocado, blue cheese and all manner of healthy, wholesome stuff. Arriving on a wooden slate and perfectly arranged, they are the mixture of economy and artistry typically associated with Scandinavia. They’ll fill you up without leaving you gorged and sluggish. They don’t take too long to eat or cost too much to buy. Everything in perfect balance, and they make it look so easy.
