Despite having a tough-as-nails reputation, Glasgow has some of the friendliest and liveliest pubs and bars in the UK.

There’s a wide variety on offer, from bustling bars with live music and a great atmosphere to cosy pubs with a broad range of spirits and ales, to chic hangouts where you can lounge with cocktails.

Glasgow craft beer fans are sure to enjoy Drygate, a compound at the Wellpark Brewery (home of Tennent's Lager) in the East End, and the West Brewery, housed in the stunning Templeton's Carpet Factory. There’s also Brewdog, for those who like their beer strong, branded and served in a dead squirrel.

If you’re after sticky floors, cheap booze and a great atmosphere there’s Nice ’N’ Sleazy and The Flying Duck. Mono, with its in-house record store, is the muso’s hangout of choice, and has a great vegan menu. You’ll also find ace vegan food and a lively vibe at Stereo, the city centre’s best bar.

If you’re in the trendy West End, Brel, which specialises in continental beer, is a must, especially when the sun is shining (it does in Glasgow sometimes), and The Sparkle Horse has a great relaxed atmosphere; The Belle is the perfect cosy nook for a winter’s night and old-school boozer The Doublet remains a Glasgow institution. And if you’re after some supper with your pint, you can’t go wrong with Stravaigin and The Ubiquitous Chip.

Other Glasgow pubs that deserve your attention are Sauchiehall Street stalwart Variety Bar, arty hangout The 13th Note, and The Old Hairdressers, which has an ever-changing roster of exhibitions and performances to enjoy with your pint. The Glad Cafe, meanwhile, has staked its claim as Glasgow south side’s key venue.
