Based in the heart of the city centre, Glasgow's iconic Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA to most) is both a prestigious, eternally divisive playground for the bigger names in Scotland’s contemporary art scene, and a godsend for anyone light on cash who just wants to kill a few hours in the pleasantest of ways. The playful exhibitions in the gorgeous, generously pillared main hall are almost always free, as are the thoughtful, older collections that fill the upper floors.

Downstairs you'll find an extensive library of works concerning art history, design, and other creatively-orientated topics, as well as a café (always a winner, right?) and free wi-fi terminals, it's all too easy to make yourself at home. Originally built as a centre for business and commerce, the gallery models itself on the spirit of exchange it fostered in its previous life, with regular workshops, artists’ talks and family days. Well worth regular visits.
