Located upon the main campus of the University of Salford, The Salford Museum and Art Gallery has a rich history. Opening in 1850 as the country's first free public library, the museum still houses the city's local history library and archive. The museum itself has several areas but heavily focusses on Victorian era history and art. Its Victorian Gallery holds a big collection of Victorian artwork including paintings and sculpures, and the LifeTimes gallery takes a look at the social and industrial heritage of Salford, featuring personal stories from local people and an insight into all walks of life during the 19th century. The museum also features Lark Hill Place — a lifesize recreation of a Victorian neighbourhood, complete with old restored shop fronts from the Salford streets. Family events are a regular occurance with plenty to do every day of the week. There are also temporary exhibition spaces within the gallery which often host work by local artists. [Charlotte Davies]
