Opened in 1925, Liverpool’s Empire Theatre is a traditional entertainment venue hosting a variety of shows throughout the year. Its extravagant interior creates an extremely grand atmosphere, which is rather appropriate for the largest two-tier auditorium in the country. As the second theatre to be built on this site (the first opened back in 1866) the Empire Theatre is host to a huge array of popular big-name touring theatre and musical productions, as well as live music, stand up comedy and dance performances. Its rich history means the theatre boasts an incredible list of previous performers, with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Laurel And Hardy, and Judy Garland appearing in its early days, while Kate Bush, Victoria Wood and Dawn French have performed there more recently. It was also a venue of choice for The Beatles multiple times throughout their career, and has hosted the Royal Variety Performance. Every year a musical created by participants of Stage Experience — a summer school for local children — is put on, with previous performances including Grease, Cats and Bugsy Malone. The venue also has a cafe bar where visitors can grab a pre-show bite to eat. [Charlotte Davies]
