The depth and breadth of Liverpool’s art galleries and exhibitions betray the city’s insistence on doing things their way. After all, it plays host to the UK’s largest international contemporary art festival in the form of Liverpool Biennial, not to mention Tate Liverpool (one of only four Tate galleries across the UK) in the splendour of the Albert Dock.
Modern and contemporary art can be found in various spaces across the city centre, from the various exhibition programmes at FACT (the much-loved Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) and Static Gallery to the photography-dedicated Open Eye Gallery. Just a short train ride from the city centre is the independent gallery Metal, while Bluecoat Gallery bridges the gap between old and new with a diverse array of exhibitions.
More traditional exhibitions find their place in the grand surroundings of The Walker Art Gallery, an oft-frequented tourist attraction and home to artworks dating back to the 13th century. There’s also the Exhibition Research Centre, lurking within Liverpool John Moores University’s John Lennon Art and Design Building and offering an alternative perspective on art within the city.
