Northern Lights, Cains Brewery Village | Liverpool L8 5SD
The Royal Standard is an artist-led art gallery in Liverpool. Its exciting programme of exhibitions and events brings together local, national and international artists — providing both a supportive hub for the artists and a space to display their work. Founded in 2006 by four Liverpool-based artists, it quickly grew out of its original home in a former pub in Toxteth and in 2008 it relocated to a larger industrial space just north of the city centre — perfect timing for Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture. Then it went on the move once again, now settled in a new home in the Baltic Triangle.
The Royal Standard gallery is now run by a team of four to six directors and has around 40 member artists. A new team of directors is appointed every two years to keep the organisation's ideas and energy fresh, and continue its innovative streak. There are new exhibitions all the time so it's well worth popping in from time to time. You'll find the Royal Standard a short walk from the city centre, in the Vauxhall area of Liverpool. Moorfields is the nearest station but it's also easily accessible from Lime Street and Central station. Entry is free — just remember it's only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between 12pm and 5pm.
