The balance between unassuming, locally beloved greasy spoon, and unappetising, largely unpalatable greasy mess is a delicate one. Fortunately, the Brooklyn Café in Shawlands has had over eight decades to perfect the art of scrumptious Italian-influenced fayre at happy prices, and has a loyal local - and increasingly less-local - fanbase to show for it. The alliterative dream formula of pizza, pasta and panini forms the bulk of Brooklyn's savoury menu, as well as some standard American favourites like pulled-pork rolls and macaroni cheese (comfort food!), but the real crowd-pleaser is their ice-cream: by all accounts so creamily delightful as to have Messrs. Ben, Jerry and Haagen-Dazs getting their chocolate chips in a right old tizz.

It’s also worth getting at Brooklyn Café’s facebook – in the past, they have put together some truly insane eating competitions, featuring wings hot enough reduce grown men to tears, and a burger challenge which at the time of writing not one hungry Glaswegian has successfully completed.
