bakery47 is inarguably a Glasgow favourite, a sweetheart of sorts which boasts a real and refreshing dedication to tradition, with a cult following to prove it. Their Instagram is just plain dreamy – over thirteen thousand followers drool over the (very) aesthetically pleasing daily updates of stylishly stencilled loaves and glossily glazed pastries. These guys put the M&S food adverts to shame.
Run by the super talented yet very modest Anna and Sam Luntley, it's an entirely grassroots business, begun from baking sourdough in their own kitchen in the Southside and then selling it door-to-door alongside other pastries and cakes. It paid off, their growing popularity securing them their own premises as they continue to go from strength-to-strength.
It's important to note as well the real community spirit in the bakery, as Anna and Sam support collaborations and events which showcase other local businesses. From workshops on crafting your own flower crown, poetry readings and pop-up book stalls to a collaboration with Edinburgh's Mary's Milk Bar resulting in a toasted sourdough chocolate bar, there's a real cosy and communal feel which makes it popular with locals.
Due to the love that goes into the baking (bread takes twenty four hours and pastries thirty six...), it's a good idea to check Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to see if it's open before heading down to avoid disappointment. Queues build up early, especially at weekends. Anna and Sam stay open until their goods are sold and then close down to prep for the next day, so you gotta be quick if you want to grab one of those otherworldly looking cakes you were eyeing up on Instagram. Quick... RUN! [Rosie McKean]
