Since opening their Shoreditch branch in 2010, Dishoom have gone on to become one of London's most talked-about Indian restaurants. Six years, five venues and countless awards later, they're now bringing their story to Scotland and have bagged themselves a coveted spot in Edinburgh's St Andrew Square. Judging by the queues on opening week, it's fair to say that their popularity has fared well north of the border.

Inspired by the Irani cafes of old Bombay, where immigrant and local communities combined over their love of food, Dishoom's welcoming vibe and carefully-planned, Persian-influenced interior instantly prevent it from feeling like a chain restaurant. Open from early morning to the wee hours, the sizeable menu caters for all hunger levels, so whether you're looking for an early morning bite or something more substantial, the only thing getting in your way will be knowing where to start.

Of course you can expect to find classic Indian dishes – the biryanis, the sheesh kebabs, the samosas – but there are also a fair few curveballs thrown in there just to keep you on your toes. Gunpowder potatoes? A Bombay take on the traditional chip butty? Breakfast naan breads?! The choices are as exciting as they are flavoursome; Dishoom may just prove that quantity does not not necessarily outweigh quality. Our recommendation? Loose-fitting clothes.

If the sound of those bacon-laden naans got your saliva glands going, you're not alone. The Skinny readers have been casting their votes, and this year the restaurant came top in the Best Breakfasts category of our annual Food & Drink Survey, along with the likes of Loudons and The Roseleaf.
