The Temple

It's no secret that the best things come in small packages - and the Temple is the pub to make acceptable the use of clichés. Once you're over the fact that this matchbox-sized space is a former lavatory, soak up the atmosphere and ask the bartender for a beer recommendation (there's a great bottle selection here). The Temple's not going to win any prizes for elegance but the tightly packed tables and jukebox make for a convivial atmosphere. Whilst it can get claustrophobically busy, if you head down early and pick your favourite spot, we think there's a good chance you'll stay put for the night. [Anna Tully]
