Previously Death Row Diner (which is relocating to a bigger space in the near future) Esperanza is, in the words of its owners – the very same team behind Yardbird, Motel Bar and Deathrow Diner – big, brash and exactly what Liverpool has been waiting for.
Right next door to Hope Street’s Frederiks and a stone’s throw away from Free State Kitchen, this part-bodega, part-diner, brew pub, sports bar and whatever else you can think of, accommodates every type of drinker. There are over 50 craft beers behind the bar, over 50 wines from around the world and an impressive selection of cocktails including frozen margaritas in strawberry, watermelon, cherry and hibiscus flavours that will set you back just under seven quid.
Bring your appetite along with you, too, because “Esperanza makes perfect pizzas. Esperanza loves nachos. Esperanza really, really loves nachos”. In fact, this place has dubbed itself as part-pizzeria, part-‘nachoria’; they offer three different types of nacho dishes, along with an impressive, reasonably priced taco selection. The pizza menu will make your mouth water, and there are classic burgers and hot dogs if you’re feeling fussy.
It’s something of a secret, but once you spot its conspicuous white exterior you’ve found the place you’ve been looking for. Inside is a like a Mexican tavern crossed with a beach bar from 1980s' Miami. Walls are whitewashed and signs are hand painted, and the caged walls and exposed brick add a unique touch. There are eight wide screen TVs, each showing football and wresting around the clock, so grab a margarita and pull up a chair, eat nachos and watch wrestling until your heart’s content.
