Metal is a creative space and art gallery in Liverpool and you'll find it in a rather unusual location, between platforms one and two at Edge Hill Station, the world's oldest passenger railway station. Many overlook Metal because of its unusual location but it's actually quite fitting, given how innovative the station itself was back when it was created in 1830.

Metal was originally founded in London in 2002, and has since opened up galleries in Liverpool, Southend-on-Sea and Peterborough. In each location, Metal works from a building of historical significance — transforming them from empty or derelict spaces into vibrant cultural hubs.

If you're coming from Liverpool city centre, it's easiest to travel to Metal by train. There are approximately four trains from Liverpool Lime Street to Edge Hill every hour, and you can step off the train right into Metal's building on platform one. There's also limited free parking on the cobbled approach to the station.

Keep an eye on listings to stay up to date with the latest exhibitions at Metal Liverpool and other Liverpool art galleries. If you like Metal, make sure you also check out Arena Studios and Gallery above the Baltic Social on Parliament Street — another independent gallery in Liverpool. [Laura Maclean]
