Leeds City Varieties Music Hall is a Grade II listed music venue and theatre dating back to 1865, with its original interior still much in keeping from its 19th century beginnings. The venue enjoyed a huge resurgence in 2009 when it gained Heritage Lottery funds that allowed it to be refurbished before being re-opened in 2011.
Alongside a steady musical offering that's seen the likes of Lloyd Cole and more contemporary bands like The Staves perform in its 467 capacity auditorium, the City Varieties Music Hall has also built a reputation as a one of the brightest hotspots for comedy in Leeds. A host of touring comedians have passed through its doors over the past number of years, from TV mainstays like Paul Mertin and Jason Byrne, to burgeoning talents like Luisa Omielan.
The City Varieties Music Hall is also a popular festive pick every year, when it will frequently run one of the most popular pantomimes of the season in a venue that has remained almost unchanged over more than 150 years. [Simon Jay Catling]
