Connected to one another, and located next to Leeds Town Hall, the Henry Moore Institute and Leeds City Art Gallery may be neighbours but are completely different beasts. While the former – as you might guess from its name – is a shrine to sculptural art, featuring ambitious and ever changing exhibitions of world leaders in sculpture, the latter shows a broader collection of art forms with clever and surprisingly candid curation. The inclusion of a sculpture by Bob and Roberta Smith within a room of colonial and landscape oil paintings, for instance, is a brave choice and one that shows Leeds’ appreciation for the classics paired with a fearlessly critical eye.

Both galleries are great landmarks in the centre of the city and offer free entry, making them an ideal respite from shopping or studying. Whether you visit for an hour or explore the connections with a fine-tooth comb, there’s a changing and in-depth collection of art just waiting for you. [Edy Hurst]

Leeds City Art Gallery is currently closed for refurbishment until 2017, so you'll probably be better off heading to the Henry Moore Institute in the meantime.
