Having thrown up their agenda in huge, white lettering on the black exterior of their well-worn Jamaica Street premises, (‘MUSIC. DRINK. FOOD’), it would appear MacSorley’s are not for subtleties. Previously known for its somewhat avant-garde pub/dining experience, with a menu including snails and cigar-fried rhubarb, MacSorley’s have returned to bold, brash basics.

Currently the menu is as Scottish as can be, with starters including smoked salmon, cullen skink, and Stornoway black pudding with a poached egg and shallot cream. Mains include pork belly, shepards pie and other simple but effective dishes – the fish and chips are particularly celebrated. There’s also a separate bar menu featuring good ol' scotch pies and stovies, a better option for those of you looking to sit around the century old bar and work your way through the 100+ spirits on offer. Finally there’s the music, which again is a relatively simple affair – a mixture of open mics, house bands, DJs and low-key locals.
