Intermedia opened on King Street in 1992 and is now based in the CCA – Centre for Contemporary Art – on Sauchiehall Street. The independent gallery space is funded by Glasgow City Council and run by the CCA, with the artists exhibiting in the gallery selected by a revolving panel of Glasgow-based artists, writers and curators – many of whom have previously had work showcased at Intermedia. The gallery usually only displays art by solo artists and groups based in Glasgow, and, as Intermedia operates independently of the CCA’s curated exhibition programme, the artist is responsible for organising, installing, curating and publicising their own exhibition – which makes for a refreshing, DIY gallery experience.
