Whilst the name may suggest visions of glass ceilings and minimalist design, the Museum of Science and Industry is one of the most architecturally-inspiring school trip wish list spots in the city. Housed in what was once the Manchester terminus of the world’s oldest surviving public railway, and comprised of four separate buildings, there’s plenty to wonder at here. With permanent exhibitions exploring the history of Manchester’s innovations – from aircraft to electricity, textiles to telecommunications – MSI also hosts a range of temporary exhibitions, as well as a diverse range of events, from wine tastings to the fascinating Manchester Science Festival. There’s a fancy sounding menu with child-friendly options in their first floor Warehouse Canteen, as well as a more informal coffee shop for visitors and the public alike; elsewhere, the visitor shop specialises in recycled giftware and glasses.
