Based next to the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford Quays, the Imperial War Museum North is the fifth addition to the IWM family. The building’s striking structure alone is enough to encourage a visit, based on the concept of a world broken by conflict, and the disorientating layout inside is designed to create an altogether immersive experience. The multi-award winning centre opened in 2002 and its main exhibition space takes a look at the wars that Britain and the Commonwealth have been involved in, from the First World War to more recent conflicts. Six smaller exhibitions give an insight into the roles of women, science and technology in war, and other displays tell the personal stories of war survivors. As well as their permanent exhibitions the museum hosts a number of art exhibitions, hosting artwork as a response to war with its Reactions programme. There’s also access to the building’s 100ft high AirShard viewing platform overlooking MediaCityUK, Salford Quays, and over to Manchester. Despite the rather harrowing subject, the free entry museum is family friendly, and provides plenty of educational resources and events, with knowledgeable staff on hand to guide visitors.
