25 The Strand | Liverpool L2 0XJ.
This family run restaurant serves up authentic Japanese cuisine and stands out as one of Liverpool’s finest restaurants. Etsu is a bit of a hidden gem, and is a great choice if you’re looking for an alternative to Wagamama or Yo! Sushi. Each dish on the menu is made by Etsu’s three Japanese chefs, who have over 60 years of experience between them. Their menus helpfully explain each dish in English if you don’t know your hiyayakko from your nanbanzuke, and there’s so much choice on offer, including lots of seafood, but there’s plenty of vegetarian options for those who don’t eat meat but still love their Japanese cuisine. Visit at lunch time and try out one of their bento boxes stuffed with rice, salad and a stir fry, along with your choice of meat or veg. Elsewhere on the menu and throughout the evening are a range of authentic and beautifully presented Japanese meals, including curries, udon soup and tempura. And it wouldn’t truly be a Japanese restaurant without its extensive sushi menu, with different variations of maki, gunkan, nigiri, and the slightly less traditional California rolls. Their sushi is freshly made to order and fairly priced with generous portions - try out their mixed sashimi platter, with 10 pieces of sushi for £9.50. The small restaurant is often busy, but don’t let that put you off - it’s popularity proves that it’s doing something right.
