The Viking is the latest venture from TV chef Simon Rimmer. Situated in West Kirby, Wirral, its name derives from the huge Viking influence on the area and a love of Scandinavian food and culture.
There’s a heavy Nordic influence here, from the Scandi-style interiors to freshly baked sourdough and rye breads, pickled herring and selection of Smorgasbords that feature on the menu. The bar menu also features many Scandinavian cask ales and beers – both bottled and draught – as well as loads of local favourites such as Wirral-brewed Trapper's Hat.
It’s not all Nordic nosh though; the menu is extensive and reasonably priced, with a good kids' selection. Brunch is served until 2pm and offers everything from waffles or toast to eggs, bacon and Instagram-worthy smashed avocado sandwiches starting from £5. The main menu sees gastro-pub classics starting from £8, with a decent pizza selection starting from £9.50.
Every Tuesday from 8:30pm sees their quiz night, where you can head down with your mates and get two-for-one deals on any pizza from the menu. There are also regular events that take place – there’s been a crayfish festival, a bank holiday garden party and a Viking cask club, with many more upcoming events to get involved in.
It’s a great spot whatever the weather, but the outdoor terrace makes The Viking the best place on the Wirral for an al-fresco (or liquid) lunch. There’s a mini cinema, a photo booth, a boules area and even a table tennis table if you think you’re up to a match.
