10 Castle Street | Liverpool L2 0NE
At first glance, chances are you’d mistake McGuffie & Co for a derelict old shop from somewhere back in the 1900s. But look a little closer and you’ll discover Liverpool’s most cherished hidden gem, so allow the old-fashioned store sign to draw you inside to an age-old vault of liqueurs, wines, spirits and top quality ales.
Situated on the corner of Castle Street and juxtaposed with a sea of upmarket eateries, this quirky little bar is a breath of fresh air among the city-dwellers of Liverpool. A true part of the city’s history, McGuffie & Co – or McGuffie’s, as it’s more affectionally known – started out as a family-run chemist all the way back in 1975, and bears the same sort of charm as an intricate vintage store you might happen to stumble on.
Once inside, the low lighting, high ceilings and walls adorned with sepia photographs will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. There are around ten tables, strategically placed in the narrowest of spaces, and walls adorned with Victorian-esque mirrors and various other paraphernalia, which gives the place an authentic look that stays true to its history.
The cocktail menu is small but perfectly executed, and the bar staff will be happy to mix up your favourite cocktail if you don’t fancy anything from the menu. The atomosphere is chilled and relaxed and there’s an exclusive feel to the place, as if those inside have discovered Liverpool's best-kept secret – and it's secret they're not willing to share.
