To many performance students reading this, it will come as no surprise that the University of Leeds is heavy in the theatre department. Not only is there the large Riley Smith hall in the Union, smaller studio spaces and The Refectory, where the likes of The Who have played, but stage@leeds provides a professional level theatre space in the heart of the campus. It even has an elusive (and cold) basement theatre known as The Raven, seen only by those societies unable to book any other space.

But don’t rule this out as a venue only for theatrical societies and departments within the Uni; the space is also used for performances by local and international talent. With plays from touring theatre companies through to student groups honing their works for an Edinburgh Fringe run, there’s a gamut of performance right on the campus doorstep. [Edy Hurst]
