The old area known as the Grand Arcade used to be one of the busiest student areas in Leeds, and while now many of the large clubs have moved on, the bars behind it still bustle on a weekend. Verve, with its rock bar up top and mariachi tequila bar downstairs, provides a cosy atmosphere tucked away from the city’s masses.
One of the best things about Verve, which rests a few yards down from the Belgrave Music Hall, is its Comedy Cellar night. Taking place every Tuesday in the 'dia de los muertos' themed basement area, it regularly welcomes all manner of comedians from across the country.
Originally set up by local legend Silky, the night showcases a mish mash of established and new acts. You'll see stars shine and other stars shine a little less, but, for a free night with local and national talent, you’d be hard pushed to find a better way to spend a Tuesday eve on the cheap.
