Looking to thump your brains out with some rowdy live tunes? Those looking for an intimate gigging experience should head to King Tut's or Sleazy's. Or if you want to expand your live music horizons (in a literal sense), check out the listings at Barrowlands.

Located in one of the railway arches underneath Glasgow’s main vein of tracks, Arc Studios was primarily a rehearsal space, usually frequented by those of a noisier persuasion on account of the trains thundering overhead every two minutes. There were four rooms, each with a decent PA, set of amps, basic kit and other extras if needed. They also had tonnes of extra room and offered storage for cabs and other equipment.

Arc’s wider charm lay in the occasional gigs it hosted in its practice spaces, which got very cramped and intimate very quickly. Fuelled by a strong DIY ethic, you could expect predominantly up-and-coming local acts looking for a change from the usual gig venue. With no bar or DJs, gigs at the Arc were a refreshing, nonsense-free experience which gave bands complete creative control over an evening. And, thanks to the folks at Arc, it also meant that they got paid.
