145-147 West Port has been a landmark for book lovers for over twenty years now. Formerly known as West Port Books it was saved by the skin of its teeth from becoming yet another cafe two years ago and is now called Edinburgh Books. It continues to serve the public, providing a large, wide ranging stock of secondhand and antiquarian books. Just when you think you’ve scanned every shelf you find the stairs and realise that there are four rooms in the basement. For the reader, there is a large, well organised stock of fiction and non-fiction. For the collector, a sizeable collection of antiquarian books and rare titles. For the tight-fisted there is a whole room where each book costs just one pound. With Clarence the water buffalo keeping a beady eye on proceedings, Edinburgh Books is full of character and charm.
