The Jolly Judge is a traditional Scottish pub tucked just off the Lawnmarket, away from the frantic tartan tourism of the Royal Mile.

The executive decision to avoid pumping music into the room means it's a pretty tranquil place to spend a few hours. It’s a wee haven with low beamed ceilings, a roaring log fire and a handsome range of drinks. Ciders include West Hefweizen, Thistly Cross and Westons Scrumpy, and the malt selection stretches from Bruichladdich to Talkisker and everything between. Wifi's included in the price of a bevvy, meaning tourists can peruse the net and plan their afternoon, and locals can smugly instagram pictures of their hats and gloves drying next to the fire.

Lunches are served until around 3pm, giving you time to line your belly before sipping some scrumpy. There's also a regular quiz night which take place on Mondays, and even more excitingly, an annual cider festival which promotes real cider in Scotland. About time. [Kate Pasola]
