The Skinny has just about recovered from the TLC (tremendous lashings of cake) lovingly lavished upon us in The Cellar Door. Formerly The Olive Branch Bistro, this upper-floor patisserie opens into a deceptively large and bright split level basement restaurant with smartly attired and smiley waiting staff. The lunch menu boasts simple yet sumptuous fresh local choices: we opted for the plum tomato and cheddar tartlet starter, alongside a hearty slab of flavoursome Aberdeen Angus beef burger - which comes served with possibly the best, piping hot home-made potato chips we've ever tasted. To top it off, we greedily guzzled our way through a cake platter prepared to order by the in-house patisserie, comprising tiramisu, creamy vanilla cheesecake, chocolate-dipped strawberries, death-by-cocoa fudge cake and heart-shaped shortbreads. Despite a predictable eyes-bigger-than-belly situation, we somehow still found room for the home-made ganache chocolates served up with our bill.
Much as The Skinny enjoyed everything we ordered, it was the unexpected little flourishes which most impressed; the iced lemon water which arrived at the table without prompting, for example, or the surprise pre-starter herby home-made breads which arrived warm from the oven.
It may be called The Cellar Door, but this fresh and friendly new eaterie is far from dungeon-dining.
