Stills opened in 1977 as Scotland’s first gallery specialising in contemporary photography. The gallery hosts regular exhibitions from comissioned artists, and hosts a 12-month residency programme for the critical and technical development of a chosen programme of six artists. The roll-call of past residency includes the likes of Ewan McClure, Brogan Ramm and Eleonora Quadri.

If you are not content to merely gaze upon the brilliant work of others there is also a treasure trove of facilities and inspiration beyond the initial exhibition space.  Stills run regular workshops including lomography, web design and sound recording. Darkrooms and high tech computers for design and editing work are available too, and the best part is that access to the studio requires no membership fees, only an induction.

The gallery also hosts film screenings, talks, exhibition previews, lectures and reading groups, seminars and workshops, and has its own research library, through which you can access photgaphy journals and magazines.

Generally, Stills is a haven for the snap-happy. [Kate Pasola]
