Wayne Marshall Plays Gershwin

Past event at Usher Hall

Sat 13 Aug

Entry from £17

Wayne Marshall joins Scottish Chamber Orchestra for an evening of rip-roaring tunes and joyful American classics, including Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

There are few musicians who can match British pianist and conductor Wayne Marshall in music blending classical and jazz – for sheer expertise, energy and verve. After directing last year’s brilliant A Grand Night for Singing, Marshall joins Edinburgh’s own Scottish Chamber Orchestra as soloist and director in an evening of foot-tapping, roof-raising, high-energy American classics.

With its rip-roaring tunes and its bluesy emotion, Gershwin’s jazz concerto Rhapsody in Blue is rightly the best-loved jazz piece in the classical repertoire. Bernstein’s vibrant ballet score Fancy Free brims over with melodies in its tale of three sailors on shore leave – a precursor to his more famous On the Town. Copland travels south to discover the infectious rhythms of Mexican dance halls, while Gershwin’s Symphonic Picture pulls together all the best-loved songs from his pioneering jazz opera Porgy and Bess – from It ain’t necessarily so to I got plenty o’ nuttin and Summertime.
