Zap by Anna Docherty | 22 Oct 2015
1. MUSIC | Headspace
Platform, Glasgow. 25 Oct, noon, free (but ticketed)

Platform makes its annual contribution to the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival, with the venue's main event – the sprawling Headspace – taking in a programme of film, theatre, music, and visual art, with guests including instrumental guitar virtuoso RM Hubbert (pictured) unveiling the fruits of his new collab with Wounded Knee, plus a Universal Comedy showcase, Cora Bissett's arresting aerial theatre piece In Her Shadows, and more, plus scran care of the Sunday Social cafe.
2. MUSIC | Beach House
O2 ABC, Glasgow. 26 Oct, 7pm, £18 here

Baltimore dream pop girl/boy duo Beach House bring their floaty brand of melodies to Glasgow, built on Alex Scally’s circular guitar arpeggios and the angelic 'ooh-aah' vocals of the dusky-voiced Victoria Legrand, out touring their fifth LP Depression Cherry – a nostalgic and minimal collection of songs meditating on themes of transience and loss (read our four-star appraisal of it here).
3. CLUBS | Milk Halloween
Flat 0/1, Glasgow. 28 Oct, 9pm, £4 on the door

Glasgow gig-in-a-club night Milk marks its final outing in its birth home of Flat 0/1, bidding au revoir with the annual riotous Milk Halloween party – including a headline set and bespoke light show from Scottish electro-meets-techno nutters Roman Nose (pictured), plus Carnivores on support, LaFontaines DJs, themed facepainting, cocktails served in pumpkins, apple dooking in cider, and more teased at 'surprises'. That do you?
4. BOOKS | Rally & Broad @ SHMAFF
The Bongo Club, Edinburgh. 23 Oct, 7pm, £5 here

The Rally & Broad literary lasses (aka Jenny Lindsay and Rachel McCrum) return to mark the kick-off of their fourth season, teaming up with the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival for an extra-special ‘we’re back!’ – with guests including rapper Loki (pictured) in collab with singer/songwriter Becci Wallace, plus writer/poet Harry Giles, and singer/songwriter-cum-storyteller Chrissy Barnacle. They then hit up Glasgow a few nights later: details here.
5. MUSIC | A Weekend Abroad
CCA, Glasgow. 23 & 24 Oct, various times, £21 weekend here

Local music suppliers Monorail decamp to the CCA for a weekend-long celebration of music and film – A Weekend Abroad – kicking off on Friday evening with sets from Molly Nilsson, The Space Lady, and Happy Meals, plus the Night School Records DJs, before Saturday finds 'em welcoming The Pastels (pictured), Birdie, Spinning Coin, and Normal Love, plus the films of Paul Kelly, and the Geographic Music DJs on decks. And, as if you needed more convincing, there'll be band-themed 'Pastelism Pilsner' for the slurping.
ADVERTISEMENT | Carnival of Souls

For a unique Halloween head to The Hippodrome, Bo'ness, for a special 'cinema in the dark' experience – Carnival of Souls– a disquieting 3D cinematic sensation... without a visual image. Seated in a traditional cinema space and equipped with wireless headphones, attendees will be plunged into darkness (courtesy of complimentary eye-masks) for an audio adventure centred on the 1962 experimental horror of the same name, including an original score, atmospheric field recording, soundscape, audio effects and experimental narration, inspired by the legacy of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and old-fashioned radio serials.
6. FOOD & DRINK | Gin Festival Edinburgh
Corn Exchange, Edinburgh. 23 & 24 Oct, various times, £8 here

Better than a day of gin, and better still than two, the touring Gin Festival makes its way to Edinburgh to host a weekend-long gin splurge across three individual sessions (Friday evening, and Saturday afternoon and evening), bringing with them over 100 different varieties of the good stuff to sup in your official ‘Gin Festival’ take-home glass, bolstered by talks from industry experts, a guided brochure, and even a suggested garnish to suit the flavours of each individual gin.
7. MUSIC | Prehistoric Friends
The Hug and Pint, Glasgow. 23 Oct, 7.30pm, £6 here

Heartfelt casiotone dreamers Prehistoric Friends – aka the band project of Miaoux Miaoux's Liam Chapman and co. – launch their self-titled debut LP, with Julian Corrie (of Miaoux Miaoux), Nichola Kerr (of Glasgow Chamber Orchestra), Joe Rattray and Louis Abbott (both of Admiral Fallow) joining them for an augmented live performance unveiling at the Hug and Pint. Support comes from Lost Map signee eagleowl.
8. FILM | Africa in Motion
Various venues, Edinburgh & Glasgow. 23 Oct-1 Nov, various times, booking here

Scotland's annual showcase of African cinema, Africa in Motion, returns to celebrate its 10th anniversary year – kicking off official on Friday evening with an opening screening/party at Summerhall, followed by a Saturday double bill at the Filmhouse, taking in Samba Gadjigo's documentary of African filmmaker Ousmane Sembene, Sembene (plus director Q&A), followed by a restored version of Sembene's 1966 film Black Girl (pictured). Read our festival preview here.
9. BOOKS | Ex Libris Book Fair
Bonar Hall, Dundee. 25 Oct, 11am, free

Pitching up again as part of this year's Dundee Literary Festival, the Ex Libris Book Fair sets up stall in Bonar Hall to showcase the best and brightest of Scotland's independent comics, small presses, illustration, and artist books scene – including Dundee based comic anthology/collective Treehouse Comic (pictured), cutesy illustrator Emseeitch, feminist arts zine Artificial Womb, and more (browse the full list of exhibitors here).
10. FILM | Ghostbusters
Cameo Cinema, Edinburgh. 25 Oct, 1pm, £10 (£9) here

We end with another early dip into the best of the bunch of Halloween events (see also Milk Halloween, pick 3), as the Cameo Cinema digs out Ivan Reitman’s ectoplasmic comedy romp Ghostbusters for a one-off airing as part of its 'Vintage Sundays' series of classic screenings, with Bill Murray et al grappling with evil on the streets of Manhattan so you don't have to. And you've then only got to wait until 2016 for the female-led Ghostbusters reboot: more on that here.
