The Vegan Leather, one of the most exciting current prospects coming out of Scotland, have released a brand new single titled The Hit. "The name is fashioned from the use of a double entendre by alluding to violence against women, while making a reference to the increasing pressures of creating a ‘hit’ song," vocalist Marie Collins explains of the song's inception. "I started to write the song from the point of view of myself as a woman feeling passive and commodified, and only there for other people’s pleasure. Art and music that has real integrity or intrinsic value is often turned into something commercial through the pressure of capitalism."

The Hit merges a diverse blend of sounds into one catchy number, resulting in a piece lined with elements of disco, pop, electronica and rock across a fizzing adventure of a track. If you missed its premiere on BBC Radio 1 earlier in the week, The Skinny are delighted to now be able to share it with you. As well as unleashing their new single into the world, The Skinny can also reveal that The Vegan Leather’s debut album Poor Girls / Broken Boys is set for release this October via Midnight Pink/Believe Digital.

Speaking about the record, Collins tells us: "Although a lot of our stuff is electronic we were really keen for the feel of the record to sound like a live band. We especially wanted the synths to be old and nostalgic feeling – not just programmed through our laptops. We took inspiration from bands like Arcade Fire, Soulwax and Phoenix who do this really well.

"Another interesting technique we used was preset on an effects module called My Bloody Valentine on some of our vocals for a few songs to achieve a weird ambient sound instead of using guitar effects. We also tried to recreate drum sounds from Chaka Khan's I Feel For You as well as David Bowie's Low album as they're both big influences to our sound.

"Our album launch is in Glasgow's finest, King Tut's [on 2 November]. When deciding on a venue for the launch this was a no brainer. Some of our best gigs have been in King Tut's including a big Hogmanay show. The atmosphere is totally electric there and we can't wait to mark our release in a venue that's very close to our hearts."

The Hit is released on 19 Jul; The Vegan Leather launch celebrate their Poor Girls / Broken Boys album launch at King Tut's, Glasgow, 2 Nov. Tickets for the show go on sale on 22 Jul
