FENN – Fatal (Track Premiere)

Listen to the brand new glitchy and electronic single, Fatal, from Dutch producer FENN

Feature by Music Team | 17 Sep 2018

At the start of the year, The Skinny voyaged to Groningen in The Netherlands for one of the most important showcase festivals of the annual music calendar, Eurosonic Noorderslag. While there we discovered Dutch producer, singer and songwriter Fenneke Schouten, aka FENN who is influenced by the likes of Portishead and Tricky as well as James Blake, Fever Ray, FKA Twigs and iamamiwhoami.

To coincide with Eurosonic at the start of the year, FENN released Flow, a five-track mini-album full of dark R’n’B-infused electronica, and as the year moves deftly into autumn FENN is back with follow-up single Fatal, a percussive and electronic track about the disillusions of love. A slow burner of a track, Fatal glitchily bubbles along with Schouten clearly sounding vulnerable at the start, but it’s not long before she’s in control and taking command of the situation. The Skinny are delighted to be premiering Fatal in the SoundCloud player below (click here if it’s not displaying correctly).

‘All I wanted / Was to be loved / So deeply / To be held’ begins Fatal, as Schouten ruminates on the end of a relationship – “the end of a self-inflicted state of insecurity” – before it develops into a confident song about regaining control of your life. “I am letting feelings of injustice out,” Schouten tells us, “as I was in a ‘ferocious beast’ state of mind when I wrote and produced it.”

With more singles in the pipeline, Fatal is a great indicator of what’s still to come from FENN in 2018.

Fatal is self-released on 24 Sep
