Gigs in Edinburgh this week

808INK @ Sneaky Pete's, 21 Nov
South East London hip-hop duo 808INK get the party started at Sneaky's tonight. With support from K4cie and Billy Got Waves, it's an all round great way to cure those hump day blues!

Noise Opera presents Navigate the Blood w/ Admiral Fallow @ Summerhall, 21 Nov
Indie folk-rock band Admiral Fallow and Gareth Williams have only bloody well gone and written an opera. It's called Navigate the Blood and follows the story of Bob and Lena, whose son Liam disappeared three years ago under mysterious circumstances. It's on tonight at Summerhall and you should go check it out for something a bit different.

Bearcubs @ Sneaky Pete's, 22 Nov
Having released his debut album Ultraviolet earlier this year, Jack Ritchie aka Bearcubs recently treated us to two new tracks (Architect and Lock On) ahead of his November tour which sees him stop off at Sneaky Pete's tonight. Support comes from Khalid Al Khajah and Glassmasterer so be sure to get down nice and early.

Withered Hand @ Voodoo Rooms, 22 & 23 Nov
Dan Willson and co are treating us to not one, but two magical shows this week at Edinburgh's ornate Voodoo Rooms. Thursday's performance will see the band joined by a brass section, with support from Phillip Taylor of PAWS; Friday will see a Withered Hand full band experience, elevated by a string section, with support from Jamie Sutherland. Can't decide which night to go to? Go to both. Problem solved.

Modern Studies @ Summerhall, 23 Nov
Glasgow-via-Yorkshire chamber pop band Modern Studies, whose sophomore album Welcome Strangers came out earlier this year via Fire Records, play Edinburgh's Summerhall tonight for what is likely to be one of their final shows of the year.

Christine and the Queens @ Usher Hall, 24 Nov
Héloïse Letissier threw down the gauntlet with one of the  best albums of the year in September. Her second album as Christine and the Queens, Chris is an 80s indebted, funk-fuelled pop gem and should be celebrated endlessly. Letissier is a big fan of a dance routine or two, so some serious shapes are also sure to be cut. They also play Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 23 Nov.

Supper Club #3 @ The Safari Lounge, 24 Nov
If we've told you once, we've now told you three times, a couple of us lovely folk (we're biased obviously) from The Skinny actually help run this night... so come along to it if you like good music, nice people and nice times. Tonight, Finnish electro-pop artist Aino Elina is performing alongside the wavy electronica of Cracked Hands. Plus, Supper Club DJs will be playing bangers well into the night. One of us finally got Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion on vinyl, so that'll be happening. Yep.

Scottish Event of the Week

[Lauryn Hill at Flow Festival by Roosa Päivänsalo]

Ms. Lauryn Hill @ SSE Hydro, 23 Nov
It’s been 20 years since Lauryn Hill released her seminal album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and, believe it or not, it’s still the only solo album she has ever released. Tax dodging and persistent lateness aside, Hill is one of the most influential artists of her generation and you’d be a fool to miss this show. To get yourself in the mood why not put the kettle on, make a cup of tea (or pour yourself a big ol' glass of wine), pop The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill on the stereo and read our enlightening Lauryn Hill retrospective. Doo-wop that thing indeed!

Gigs in Glasgow this week

Seasick Steve @ O2 Academy, 21 Nov
Celebrating the recent release of his ninth studio album, Can U Cook?, American blues musician Seasick Steve plays the O2 Academy tonight.

HMLTD @ Broadcast, 21 Nov
Head along to Broadcast tonight (not Stereo, where this show was previously meant to be), to be thrown into a world where music, fashion and art collide in one heck of a live show. HMLTD have just promised on Twitter that they'll play their first ever cover song tonight too, so don't miss it. Support comes from Sleaze Kidneys and Das Plastixx.

65daysofstatic @ CCA, 22 Nov
While fans of Justin Timberlake are known as the Tennessee Kids, fans of Sheffield experimental band 65daysofstatic are known as '65kids', so there you go. Interesting (or not so interesting, you decide) trivia aside, if you class yourself as one of the 65kids then make sure you head along to the recently reopened (YAY!) CCA tonight to catch 65daysofstatic in the flesh. And hey, if you're not already one of the 65kids maybe you will be after tonight? Cool.

Paul Smith @ The Hug & Pint, 22 Nov
The Maxïmo Park frontman released his fourth solo album, Diagrams, at the end of October and now he's out on the road in celebration. While it may not feature anything quite so excellent as Going Missing on it, it's still a pretty great listen and if you're a fan of Maxïmo Park then Paul Smith is most certainly for you.

Soft Riot @ The Old Hairdressers, 22 Nov
Possession Records are putting on their final gig of the year at The Old Hairdressers and it's happening tonight. Featuring the label's very own 80s-fuelled Soft Riot, there will also be performances from Coventry-based Vieon and Sham Gate, the solo electronic project of LYLO's Niall Morris.

Errant Boy @ The 13th Note, 23 Nov
Edinburgh’s Errant Boy are guitarist Chris Harvie, drummer Sarrah McLaren and bassist/singer Sean Ormsby, who create super enjoyable 80s-inspired, quirky indie-pop. We recently premiered the music video for We Like You from their second album Memory Fractures, which came out just last week via their own Leith-based label, Errant Media. Help them celebrate its release by joining them tonight at The 13th Note. NB: They also play Leith Depot, Edinburgh, 30 Nov.

BEAK> @ The Art School, Glasgow
, 24 Nov
Bristol three-piece BEAK> – featuring Geoff Barrow (Portishead), Billy Fuller (Robert Plant) and Will Young (not the one from Pop Idol, but rather from Moon Gangs) – are fresh from releasing their third album, the annoyingly titled >>>, which we awarded five stars to. While we still have no idea how the album’s title is meant to be pronounced, we can confirm that it is a great listen and getting yourself along to Mono tonight is an absolute must. Support comes from Glasgow’s Snapped Ankles so be sure to get down in good time.

Shame @ SWG3, 24 Nov
Shame's debut album, Songs of Praise, was recently chosen as Rough Trade's number one album of 2018 and they play SWG3 tonight (not O2 ABC where this show was originally meant to take place, so don't go to the wrong venue!) Be sure to head down nice and early to catch IDLES labelmates Dublin four-piece Fontaines D.C. – who we're predicting big things for in 2019 – on support duty.

Sunflower Bean @ The Art School, 26 Nov
Excellent New York trio Sunflower Bean are heading out on the road this month following the release of their brilliant debut album, Twentytwo in Blue, earlier in the year. They've got a brand new EP on the way entitled King of Dudes, set for a January release, so we reckon you might also hear some lovely new tunes tonight at The Art School. Check out our recent interview with the band here, and be sure to get down early to catch Miya Folick and Jesse Jo Stark.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ SWG3, 26 Nov
Having released two albums this year, with April's Sex & Food and October's IC-01 Hanoi, the Portland, Oregan-based band have a lot to celebrate. Catch them tonight in all their psychedelic wonder at SWG3.
