Don't be fooled by its somewhat dishevelled appearance – The Waverley Bar is something of an Edinburgh institution. Generations have come here to keep warm with a beer on a winter's night, and the clientele are an eclectic mix, the expected elderly gentlemen rubbing shoulders with younger generations of artists, writers and musicians.

Its decor may not be the most polished, but the dust-luxe atmosphere is said to give the place a nostalgic, comfy feel – truly complemented by Gatsby-friendly jazz tunes and amicable folk behind the bar. It's oft-remarked too that the drinks list isn't particularly extensive, but if you're in the mood for something simple, you'll be in good company at this hangout.

It's been open since the 60s, and stopping by for a drink will confirm exactly why. The atmosphere is warm, you get your beer in a proper dimpled glass pint mug, and you might even hear some folk music upstairs. It's all a chilly Edinburghian or homesick student could ask for.
