Redolent – I Thought They Were Just Fireworks (Video Premiere)

In February 2018, The Skinny premiered Redolent’s brilliant single Dantercepies. The Edinburgh four-piece then went on to release their Sgitheanach EP in May of the same year, but have consequently been pretty quiet ever since. Imagine our delight, then, as 2019 is drawing to a close and we received word of their powerful new single I Thought They Were Just Fireworks. In its second half, the track is bursting at the seams with a manic falsetto that brings to mind the likes of Thom Yorke. Needless to say, it's definitely whet our appetite for more new music from Redolent in the new year (fingers crossed).

“I think sonically the song is influenced by the heavier bands we like – Glassjaw in particular; At the Drive-in,” singer, guitarist and keyboardist Robin Herbert tells us. “Lyrically it’s inspired by nightmares about non-fiction horror from the news. Specifically American mass murdering ghouls with guns. I used to have a really vivid one when I was younger, in which my sleeping brain gave the faces of the perpetrators I’d seen on TV bodies, which broke into my house, cackling and marauding, and shot me. It recurred for a while. I felt like they were as close to ‘ghosts’ as you could maybe really find, and I was a wee bit haunted by these dead guys from across the world.”

The Skinny are delighted to be premiering the music video for I Thought They Were Just Fireworks, which, continuing with their DIY ethic, was shot and edited by the band. “I tried to give the video a nightmare vibe and sense of panic to fit [the song]: the black and white and short flashes of spooky B-roll.” Herbert continues: “We had fun with the whole thing ... It was cool to have control of everything, we hope it came out OK!”
