Following on from the release of their debut album Heterogaster last May, Bristol-formed five-piece Mesadorm are back with their latest single The Joy It Joins Us Up, an utterly beautiful stripped-back, piano-led piece of music featuring the as-ever effortless and beguiling vocals of Blythe Pepino. The single is taken from their upcoming album Epidacus – which will see songs from Heterogaster reimagined alongside new songs – set for release on 12 April via Babylegs Records.

Recorded live with a simple piano and vocal arrangement in St. Peter’s Church in Eype, Dorset, the same church that PJ Harvey recorded Let England Shake in, "The Joy It Joins Us Up is a love song and a breakup song simultaneously," Pepino tells us. "It's about still loving the person you are leaving while the beautiful sadness and joyfulness of the breakup journey morphs slowly into a new relationship."

'And the pain it feels so fucking good / To know I still have you inside me / Because the joy it joins us up,' Pepino sings, heart-on-sleeve. Telling us more about the track and the breakup with her ex-partner, she continues: "Tom and I sat in the bath and decided to cry and laugh and remember all the incredible moments we had shared together. Though we had allowed change to happen gradually, the time had come to say goodbye to our romance.

"The 'smiles in the movement' are his smiles and the smiles of our old and new loves. A stupendously beautiful connection and understanding between us all. Tom taught me how to love, how to trust, and this is my way of saying he is carved into the very fabric of me."
